Cameron Crowe: 'Elizabethtown Certainly Created Some Thoughtful Times'
Cameron Crowe knows you didn't like 'Elizabethtown,' but his feelings aren't hurt -- everyone's entitled to their own personal opinion. Inside an interview with Vulture, the director spoke candidly about his 2005 feature film as well as the harsh response it received from experts and audiences alike. "'Elizabethtown' certainly created some thoughtful occasions, but nothing paralyzing. In my opinion, only if something arises from an inauthentic place in case you feel prone to stuff that anybody might say," recognized Crowe. "I support it and didn't feel savaged. It absolutely was somewhat brutal. However obtain that people wish to visit town. I express myself, too." So what's next for Crowe? After 'We Bought a Zoo,' which hits theaters Friday, the director will probably be undertaking a "straight-out comedy," and can not say additionally to that particular. And for your 'Say Anything' follow-up? Cameron has ideas, but the potential for making one seems rather slim. "There has been many individuals who got upset once i mentioned it's the one factor I'd consider doing -- some factor with Lloyd's character or one of the side figures," adding the film might be "a shadow from the previous story, but figures that you just understood, type of. And you also trigger relating to this tributary to another story together. This is the way i'd execute a 'Say Anything' follow-up." Crowe also discusses the mixtapes he gives his stars and also the plans for just about any Marvin Gaye biopic. You can examine the whole interview at Vulture. What Can We Glean from the New Prometheus Poster -- Besides Its Lame Tagline?
Ridley Scott has settled on a tagline for his pseudo-prequel to Alien, the star-studded June 2013 release Prometheus: “The Search For Our Beginning Could Lead To Our End.” Does that sound a little too much like the Breaking Dawn: Part I tag “Forever is Only the Beginning” to anyone? Both are Hallmarkian takes on mortality, which is a shame considering Prometheus should be one of the most original thrillers of next year. Its new poster, along with our musings thereon, follow. That’s an awfully murky photo. Like some post-apocalyptic retelling of The Great Gatsby where the green light guides us ceaselessly into the gnarly, space-invading future. (I’d cast Joel Edgerton in that one, too.) All I’m sensing so far is hi-tech sci-fi grandeur with a couple of easily traceable philosophical implications. Which is great. And it doesn’t require the prized craftwork of Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, and Patrick Wilson, but it gets it anyway. Can we blow through this mundane Oscar season and arrive at next June already? Bring me the Patrick Wilson “crumbling morality” face I so desire! ‘Prometheus’ Poster Promises A Search That Will Take Us To ‘Our End’ [The Playlist]

Males In Black 3 Trailer Online
If you are frightened of levels, look awayWe've seen a few posters, however a clip for MenInBlack 3 has hit the web, and provided us with only a small little more of the clue what to anticipate in the film. In a nutshell: familiar gags like using the neuraliser Will Cruz jumping off a really tall building and Josh Brolin carrying out a really, great Tommy Lee Johnson impression. The plot sees Smith's Agent J travel in time for you to avoid the murder of his partner Agent K(Tommy Lee Johnson) in 1969 - that they should do with K's more youthful counterpart (JoshBrolin). Also showing up are Emma Thompson as the second agent In Black, Jermaine Clement, Alice Eve and MichaelStuhlbarg.Bald eagle-eyed audiences will observe that a couple of from the shots here look a little odd, which we are putting lower towards the whole factor being shot in three dimensional, but we are positive that it'll be considered a go back to form following the lacklustre second film. And now it's time someone cast Johnson and Brolin because the same person given that they always, y'know, kinda appeared like these were. The film's had greater than a couple of hiccups and delays throughout production, but let us hope it's all regulated touring between now and could 25, 2012.[[Poll561]]

David Cronenberg Has Seen the First Two 'Twilight' Movies
You'd never expect to hear the words David Cronenberg and 'Twilight' in the same sentence -- that is until the 'Dangerous Method' director cast Robert Pattinson in his upcoming movie, 'Cosmopolis.' In it, a 28-year-old billionaire (Pattinson) travels around Manhattan for the day in his limousine. Most critics aren't exactly fawning over the 'Twilight' films -- or for that matter, Pattinson's performance -- but Cronenberg saw something in Robert, particularly after watching his non-vampire moments in 'Remember Me' and 'Little Ashes.' That's not to say he wasn't impressed with Pattinson's work as Edward Cullen (yes, the man behind 'Videodrome' has seen 'Twilight' and 'New Moon'). "I was impressed with his screen presence and a lot of his stillness, and a lot of other things. But the other movies showed me he had range. He had the range that I wanted," Cronenberg told Vulture's Jada Yuan. So has he seen 'Breaking Dawn Part 1' yet? "I think I'll wait for the screener." In addition to 'Cosmopolis,' Cronenberg also discusses his current film, 'A Dangerous Method,' which stars Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Some critics have mentioned that this film isn't particularly "Cronenbergian," a notion that the director could care less about. That's totally, totally irrelevant. See, this is very common. I'm often telling critics that they should not confuse their process with mine. I don't care what movies I've made before. I don't care what people think is Cronenbergian or not. It's irrelevant to me. It's as though I'd never made another movie when I'm making this movie. There's nothing that I can take from those other movies, or what people think that I do, that is creatively of use to me. When I'm making this movie, once I've decided that yeah, this is a subject that interests me, I'm going to make this movie, I just focus on it. It's of the moment. The movie tells me what it wants. I listen to the movie; it tells me what it wants in terms of style, visual style, dramatic style. And I have no desire to impose some preconceived idea of Cronenbergness on the project. Cronenberg goes on to discuss the difficulty of financing films, particularly during a recession, as well as his thoughts on Occupy Wall Street. If you're a Cronenberg fan, the entire interview is definitely worth your time. 'A Dangerous Method' is currently in theaters. 'Cosmopolis' is scheduled for a 2012 release date. Tom Hanks Eyeing 'In the Garden of Beasts' as Potential Star Vehicle
Tom Hanks may head back to World War II once again. Again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hanks will produce and potentially star in the Universal adaptation of 'In the Garden of Beasts.' The non-fiction book -- from writer Erik Larson, who also wrote 'The Devil in the White City, which Leonardo DiCaprio has long been attached to -- follows William Dodd, an American ambassador in 1933 Berlin. Dodd's family had many encounters with the Nazis during that time period -- especially his daughter, Martha, who carried on an affair with a Gestapo officier and a Soviet spy. Girl got around! Hanks's fascination with World War II is well documented. In addition to starring in 'Saving Private Ryan,' he also produced the HBO mini-series's 'Band of Brothers' and 'The Pacific.' Don't get too excited about 'Beasts' just yet. For reference, DiCaprio signed on to possibly star in 'White City' last November. As yet, little other movement has happened with the project. Awards Consultant Sues Lionsgate Claiming Unpaid Bill for Nicole Kidman Campaign
The nominations for the 27th annual Independent Spirit Awards were revealed this morning, and were dominated by The Weinstein Company's The Artist and Sony Pictures Classics' Take Shelter, which scored five nods each. Historically, Indie Spirit winners have tended to get nominated for -- but lose -- at the Oscars. That could change this year, however, with The Artist and The Descendants, two films that have both resonated as strongly as any with Academy members thus far, both nominated for best feature, best director and best screenplay.our editor recommends'The Artist,' 'Take Shelter' Dominate Indie Spirit Award NominationsThe Making of 'The Artist'The Making of 'My Week With Marilyn'Take Shelter: Film Review PHOTOS: The Making of 'The Artist' The Artist, The Descendants and Take Shelter will compete for best feature with Beginners (the big winner at last night's Gotham Awards), Drive, and 50/50. Bizarrely, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which is one of the likeliest best picture Oscar nominees, was denied a spot in this category (as well as best director and best screenplay), even though it was nominated for best supporting actor (Corey Stoll) and best cinematography. Drake Doremus' Like Crazy, which also seemed to be a likely nominee, was also snubbed. PHOTOS: 'The Descendants' Premiere Red Carpet Arrivals A few other films were left out of the major categories for other reasons: Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, with its $30 million budget, was too big to pass as an indie for this group. Meanwhile, three critics' favorites with Oscar aspirations -- Lars von Trier's Melancholia, Steve McQueen's Shame and Lynne Ramsey's We Need to Talk About Kevin -- were deemed to be foreign films and therefore ineligible outside of the category alotted for those. PHOTOS: Gotham Awards Red Carpet Arrivals Lastly, two inexplicable snubs occurred in the lead acting categories: George Clooney, the star of The Descendants, was left out of the best actor race, while Glenn Close, the star of Albert Nobbs, was left out of the best actress field-- even though her co-star Janet McTeer was nominated for best supporting actress. (I wouldn't read too much into these particular outcomes; indeed, it is highly likely that the Academy will reverse them.) I expect that those races will now be won by Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and either Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) or Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), respectively, and that Christopher Plummer (Beginners) and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) will prevail in the supporting categories. Hammond: AFI Shuts The Extended Fall Fest Oscar Circuit Whos On Top, Who Flopped?
Withlast evening’s conclusion in the annual AFI Fest in Hollywood the curtain finally fell round the 2011 Fall Film Festivals. And so the question remains, posseses an Oscar leader emerged after two several days relating to this circuit? AFI used to be held in the year but smartly repositioned itself to November previously. The running side benefit of this is the Fest features a shot at getting an impact on honours season, in addition to AFI can get the select from the litter if this involves prolific competitors. That strategy has labored again this year, no less than if this involves the earth premiere opening film, Clint EastwoodsJ. Edgar too for that closing evening selection, Steven Spielbergs CGI animation contender,The Adventures of Tintin which made its U . s . States premiere last nightat AFI. Neither of individuals company company directors is definitely recognized for putting his films broadly round the fest circuit however, you cannot deny that punching the fests might be a good strategy. The ultimate four Best Picture individuals who win -No Country For Old Males, Slumdog Uniform, The Hurt Locker, The King’s Speech counseled me major festival players, finding their footing round the circuit after which it sailing easily into Oscars heart. This year, likely best pic options that began at one fest or other are the Artist, Moneyball, The Descendants, The Ides of March, Evening amount of time in Paris now, J. Edgar. There is however an amount bigger number than usual of people missing the circuit and looking other techniques to obtain the Academys attention. That list includes The Woman While Using Dragon Tattoo, War Equine, Very Noisy and very Close, Youthful Adult, The Help, The Iron Lady andInThe Land of Blood stream and Honey. Stuck somewhere within the center is Martin Scorseses Hugo, which tried to trap the fest wave within the NY Film Festival by having a piece happening. The very best final results from the gambit were mixed opinions toward the film, no less than because form. Then, when the film was completed, Vital skipped the opportunity to exhibit it at AFI and made a decision to go to another direction (concurrently the Fest happening anywhere) by unveiling it almost at the same time to L.A.-based experts, authors the ones in the Academy. Reaction was upbeat as well as the film, which opens November. 23rd, is becoming being discussed just like a Best Picture contender, a thing that didnt happen after its happening NY screening. For AFI, despite its opener and closer, the comfort in the selection was mostly dj vu from what bleary-eyed festival goers are actually seeing throughout the time from the final two several days, a variety of it even imported from last Mays Cannes Film Festival which produced its own significant volume of competitors, most particularly Evening amount of time in Paris, The Tree of Existence, The Skin Home Is andcountless other language game game titles. Whether a number of AFIs non-premiere game game titles really affect honours several weeks are an problem mark nevertheless it did give them a hollywood chance inside the town where most voters live. The Festival itself, though, tries to rival Toronto and Cannes in a few waysfor the finest and several consistent volume of red-colored-colored carpet galas. People galas contain movies that apparently havent met a film festival they didnt like like the Weinstein CompanysThe Artist (which hit fests small and big since Cannes, winning several audience honours in route), Oscilloscopes We Must Discuss Kevin, Lars von TriersMelancholia as well as the current king in the circuit, Steve McQueens questionable Shame starring Michael Fassbender. If any film has tips in the devoted fest strategy this season it may be that particular. From Venice noisy . September, it needed people experts by storm and won a Best Actor prize for Fassbender, resulting in a sensation that handled to obtain essential-see if this hit Telluride and Toronto a few days later. This is when Fox Searchlight needed serious notice and acquired the film no matter the certainty from the NC-17 rating. Or even because of it. Debate rarely hurt and Shame, due to its graphic nudity and sexual character, has fantastically ridden the wave. It's anybodys guess though how this could play outdoors the cocoon in the festival trail if the finally opens noisy . December. This really is frequently mentioned about plenty of 2010's films wanting to translate their festival accomplishments into boxoffice and Oscar gold. There's without doubt that Michel Hazanavicius charmer, The Artist, is really a smash each and every fest it's carried out, but outdoors from the rarefied world will Harvey Weinstein be capable of convince regular moviegoers who arent taken up inside the intoxicating festival atmosphere to go to notice within the multiplex? Its a black and white-colored quiet movie. Festgoers are employed to the sorts of films that inspired it regular Joes less.Certainly everyone realizes the requirement for fests for beginning movies but what plays round the Croisette, the rivers of Venice, the dusty streets of Telluride or perhaps the cosmopolitan urban centers of Toronto, NY and La won't ride to glory ultimately. Possibly this is exactly why Vital, which got stung delivering Jason ReitmansUp Up round the circuit couple of years ago only to see its September glow dim when it absolutely was finally released in December (despite the fact that it did receive major Academy Award nominations including Best Picture), remains searching for new methods to demonstrate numerous its competitors. ReitmansYoung Adult with Charlize Theron might have made an appearance primed for fests. Ultimately, Reitmans movies notablyJuno andThank You For Smoking had very effective fest berths just before going onto a good deal bigger commercial success. But Componen deliberately keptThe Fighter along with the CoensTrue Grit off that path a year ago and both prospered at Oscar time with Best Picture as well as other noms, too as with the problem ofThe Fighter two supporting acting Academy awards. When shock rang in blogdom in regards to the non-fest way of Youthful Adult, an consultant described they'd do other fun things, even if this no-fest approach was various things for Jason. In the last month Vital does appear tests, secret showings across the country that generate immediate twitter buzz. It seems being the completely new factor this honours season. If the developed a go to the completely new Beverly Cinema in L.A. in the start of November, influential honours authors were requested, loved whatever they saw and started shouting Oscar, something Vital isn't doing inside a overt way so far. Disney and DreamWorks are actually doing the identical factor for Spielbergs War Equine, creating their unique secret fest circuit in small metropolitan areas mostly inside the Area or places like Bellevue, Washington. Its certainly another way of remaining inside the conversation without requiring to do the sometimes-difficult festival route. Inside the situation of both films, it had the most well-liked effect of getting participants to feed the truly amazing word, much like they're doing inside the streets from the film fest soon after a screening of some hot title. The big trouble with doing fests clearly is when you select the wrong venue. Venice, since it calculates, might possibly not have been where for Madonnas W.E., that's been trying to recuperate since, remains tweaked in editing and has the capacity to emerge again for itsOscar qualifyingrunin December and regular runs Feb 4. Similarly, Carnage, Roman Polanskis adaptation in the Tony winning play, God of Carnage, might have been best missing an italian guy , city and heading to NY where it better carried out since the opener in the NYFF. The simple truth is, The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics, that's delivering it, has received heavy rotation of course in many the festivals which is a sizable believer in utilizing those to promote its model of movies. It absolutely was nearly impossible to find an fall Festival without the presence of SPCs choice of the Dangerous Method, Footnote, Which Side We Proceed Now?, In Darkness, The Skin Home Is, A Separation and Carnage (despite the fact that latter did skip Telluride and Toronto). The primary one indisputable factor about festivals may be the free publicity value. Its a means to gather lots of media in a single location and acquire a tsunami of talk going. It assists to for those who have a star as ready, willing ready as say, George Clooney, who hit Venice withThe Ides of March round the fests opening evening and contains been everywhere with this particular film. Hes also along with around withThe Descendants through which he stars a title that's probably the most effective contender to depart 2010's fest circuit. You can't buy that kind of coverage. And may Oscar voters have your vision switched or you'll be able to better way honours strategists continues to educate yourself regarding?

"He'll certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativeness and associations towards the Oscar." Now all that's left is getting a host. EARLIER: That which was rumor mere hrs ago has become apparently almost fact. Deadline's Nikki Finke reviews that John Grazer has recognized the Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences offer to create the Academy awards telecast, following a resignation of Brett Ratner. So why do you care that Grazer, the super producer behind 'J. Edgar' and 'Tower Heist,' has had the gig? Because he will try to convince Eddie Murphy to not-quit as Academy awards host. You heard right: per Finke, the Academy wants Murphy to host and Grazer's first duty as producer is to buy him back! Hey, why don't you? Only at that rate, maybe Ratner can return to cater the Academy awards or something like that. (Shrimp cocktail, natch.) Just hire Neil Patrick Harris already, AMPAS. Henry Cavill's Superman Will not Put on Red-colored Training pants, and much more each morning Grind
A bad Monday for Brett Ratner: additionally to getting out of bed towards the disappointing box-office outcomes of 'Tower Heist,' Ratner found themself in an enormous amount of warm water after remarking to some crowd of moviegoers on Friday evening in La that, "Rehearsing's for fags." On Monday mid-day, many prominent film authors wondered whether that type of slur would get Ratner fired from his next job: producer from the 84th annual Oscars. Because it works out, that will not happen. Yet. "His remarks were inappropriate," Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences leader Tom Sherak told Deadline. "[Ratner] stated it very best in his apology: that his comments were dumb and insensitive. Whenever you think about our community, it went against all of the values from the creative community we represent. He understood it had been wrong and that he released that response as rapidly every individual ever has. The end result is, this will not and should not happen again. It won't happen again. He apologized and we'll move ahead. How do you know this? I have known this guy for any very very long time. He's many buddies who're people from the lgbt community. The apology he gave I really believe originates from his heart. Basically did not accept is as true, I'd find a solution. This really is about integrity and praising the Oscars, but all of us get some things wrong but he did not mean it." Sherak may be convinced, try not to expect GLAAD to consider this so gently. Vulture reviews the watchdog organization thought Ratner's words were "unacceptable" and also the group has plans for "further action." For Ratner, he'll likely have a lower profile now than he's before. Though "lower profile" may have another definition for that embattled director. In the end, on Monday morning, two full days after saying the gay slur -- and, knowing from their own apology, realizing it was wrong -- Ratner made an appearance with Howard Stern on SiriusXM and spoken about his fondness for giving dental sex to women, along with the time he earned Lindsay Lohan have an STD test before making love together with her. "It was before she was really 'Lindsay Lohan,'" Ratner stated (based on TheWrap). "She really was youthful." That does not seem just like a guy worried about his words getting him in danger, will it? 'Puss in Boots'"Puss in Boots" needed a larger set of knee-levels to trek with the recent mucky B.O. market. The Vital-DreamWorks Animation toon first showed with $34 million, enough to win the domestic box office, but not able to reverse a malaise among moviegoers.B.O. commentators thought "Puss," which gained a soft 51% of their opening from three dimensional, would benefit more from the five-week gap in the household market ("Dolphin Tale" was the final family-specific film to bow on Sept. 23). Though Imax, often a fan-boy driven format, led a good 7% from the total domestic opening for "Puss," with $3.two million globally. It isn't obvious just how much Halloween weekend affected the toon's opening, because the holiday falls on the Monday this season. The Wall Street Journal reported this early Saturday, noting Googlewould like to sell some advertising across Yahoo’s websites. The king of search has talked to two private equity firms among buyers who could possibly take Yahoo private and try turning the Internet pioneer around. Separately, Yahoo’s Chinese partner Alibaba also hopes to meet with private equity companies about a potential bid to buy Yahoo and sooner rather than later. Alibaba chief executive Jack Ma said Thursday that if Yahoo’s board “is willing to sell, I’m interested. They’ve just got to let us know.” Federal officials would almost certainly be suspicious if not hostile to any deal involving China. Yahoo founder Jerry Yang, meanwhile, said a sale has not been ruled out but feels “there are plenty of options.” Yahoo continues searching for a chief executive.

Relatively Speaking: Theater Review
Bucking the prevailing Broadway trend, it's not the actors but the playwrights who are the draw in Relatively Speaking. Tenuously connected by the theme of family, these three one-act comedies by Ethan Coen, Elaine May and Woody Allen yield some chuckles, even if John Turturro's flat-footed direction often works against them. But the featherweight package makes a flimsy case for the star power of writers.our editor recommendsEthan Coen, Woody Allen and Elaine May One-Act Plays to Make Broadway Debut Strongest entry is May's George is Dead, which has been kicking around since 2006 as a vehicle tailored for Marlo Thomas. Wearing mutton-dressed-as-lamb couture and a frosted blond wig, she plays an expensively preserved, dippy socialite and monster of self-absorption named Doreen. Following the death of her husband in a skiing accident, she turns up in crisis mode at the home of her former nanny's married daughter, Carla (Lisa Emery). Grief is less an issue than confusion for Doreen, who is unequipped to make any kind of decision. "I feel awful," she whines. "What will I do? I don't have the depth to feel this bad." There's sturdy support from Emery, balancing resentment and forbearance, and from Patricia O'Connell as Carla's mother, who neglected her own daughter to tend to Doreen's bottomless pit of needs. But it's Thomas' self-parodying turn that gives the comedy a kick, making Doreen blithely insensitive yet somehow poignant in her helplessness. She's like a Real Housewife with vulnerability and a good joke writer. Watching her tune out Carla's marital discord by getting lost in vintage sitcoms can't help but raise a smile. Maintaining the whimsical mood if not the freshness or imagination of his bounce-back hit this year, Midnight in Paris, Allen's Honeymoon Motel is a shticky Borscht Belt farce. "The heart wants what it wants," Allen famously said in a 1992 Time Magazine interview about his romantic defection from Mia Farrow to her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn. "There's no logic to those things." Almost 20 years later, Allen trots out that same sentiment in a scenario with uncomfortable similarities. Jerry (Steve Guttenberg) and Nina (Ari Graynor) check into the bridal suite of a tacky motel, but a stream of intruders disrupt their bliss. It soon emerges that Jerry wasn't the groom and that the actual wedding was derailed. The fallout over Nina's change of heart at the altar provokes varying degrees of outrage, anger and philosophical reflection among the brides' parents (Julie Kavner, Mark Linn-Baker), Jerry's wife (Caroline Aaron), the best man (Grant Shaud), the Rabbi (Richard Libertini), Jerry's shrink (Jason Kravits), a pizza delivery guy (Danny Hoch) and the intended groom (Bill Army). There are moments to savor from the actors, and nobody will dispute Allen's facility with a one-liner, even if many of them here are shamelessly hoary. Guttenberg and Graynor provide a serenely daffy center to the maelstrom of bickering and chaos, Kavner's croaky line readings could make the phone book funny, and Aaron is the queen of sour cynicism. But Turturro is particularly out of his depth in this entry. Farce needs buoyancy, breathlessness and physical momentum to achieve liftoff. The director merely ushers the ten-member cast onto Santo Loquasto's crowded set and then doesn't know what to do with them beyond stand and deliver. That mismatch of director and material is also evident in the lineup's first and most insubstantial entry, Coen's Talking Cure. Multiple sessions between a therapist (Kravits) and his patient (Hoch) in a high-security psych facility trace the latter's violent behavior to his quarrelsome parents (Katherine Borowitz, Allen Lewis Rickman), whose dueling obsessions are Heifetz and Hitler. Oy. This might have been fodder for a funny throwaway joke in one of Allen's screen comedies of the late '70s or early '80s. But Coen lacks the required lightness of touch. Despite attempts to beef up the scenario by musing on semantics and contrasting perceptions of mental illness, these 25 pointless minutes land with a thud. Coen's film credentials might lead audiences to assume that his input would bring some edge to a mystifying enterprise that feels like an antiquated throwback to the days when Neil Simon comedies ruled Broadway. But Talking Cure is the least satisfying item on a stale menu. Venue: Brooks Atkinson Theatre, NY (runs indefinitely) Cast: Caroline Aaron, Bill Army, Katherine Borowitz, Lisa Emery, Ari Graynor, Steve Guttenberg, Danny Hoch, Julie Kavner, Jason Kravits, Richard Libertini, Mark Linn-Baker, Patricia O'Connell, Alan Lewis Rickman, Grant Shaud, Marlo Thomas Playwrights: Ethan Coen, Elaine May, Woody Allen Director: John Turturro Set designer: Santo Loquasto Costume designer: Donna Zakowska Lighting designer: Kenneth Posner Sound designer: Carl Casella Presented by Julian Schlossberg, Letty Aronson, Edward Walson, LeRoy Schecter, Tom Sherak, Daveed D. The Butcher's Wife (Wangliang p lixiang)
A Sea Original production. (Worldwide sales: Smiley Film Sales, Auckland, Nz.) Produced by Wang Xuemei. Directed, put together by Gao Xiongjie. With: Fang Ye, Tang Huihua, Yu Changliu, Hu Yibo, Zhu Yiqi. (Mandarin dialogue)"The Butcher's Wife" can be a respectable but considerably unrewarding debut for author-director Gao Xiongjie, a skilled teacher of film and tv arts at China's Central Academy of Drama. This story from the simple country guy chasing after after his ambitious runaway wife for the city is applicable to low-key realism but is simply a cautionary melodrama. Mixture produces a dreary small-scale tragedy with one-note figures whose mismatched marriage is tough to root for. Further worldwide travel will probably be minor. Qiao (Tang Huihua) prone to join China's emerging middle-class popular becoming an educated professional married to her high-school sweetheart Liu Fei (Zhu Yiqi). However he's graduation from college, while she never handled to obtain past the entrance exam. Rather, she's got married humble butchers Liang (Fang Ye) to cover -- quite simply, to permit him pay -- her family's obligations, yet she continues to have not relinquished her old dreams. Really, she stalls consummating the marriage, proclaiming she must give consideration to 1 further work for balance college entry. When that effort fails once again, she flees to Hangzhou, where she will receive a awesome reception from Liu, though he takes her virginity readily enough. She stays in Hangzhou, working progressively degrading low-finish jobs, battling the pleas of her pursuing, new spouse. Liang's pining for his wife doesn't make much sense once she's insulted, bankrupted, freely humiliated and lied to him. But we are made to sympathise along with his noble, masochistic mission, while apparently remorseless Qiao is offered no further dimensionality beyond a few expressions of self-loathing. Beyond maintaining their vows, there's zero reason these two people should stay (or ever are actually) together, and so they flattened in the heavy-handed method that rings hollow something is wrong when audiences care so little about lives so absolutely destroyed. While Gao most most likely needs an even more complex commentary on China's rapidly changing socioeconomic landscape (as suggested with the constant background noise of overheard advertisements, TV news, etc.), "The Butcher's Wife" rather eventually eventually ends up seeming a vintage-fashioned morality fable drably built in quasi-verite trappings. Despite frequent handheld visual immediacy and naturalistic acting, the very best point here seems being "Lady, stay home and know your house! In . A subtler treatment may have let us feel Qiao's discomfort since the "economic miracle" passes her by -- she's smart enough to require more from existence than mountain-village peasantry, while not vibrant enough to achieve it -- but Gao's script offers her as merely a callous ingrate sticking hooks in the devoted husband's heart. The highest take into account the appearance package, if an individual which has a inclination to underline the pic's repetitiveness, is applying blind folk music artist Tong Zhaoji just like a type of singing commentator throughout interstitials that chart the narrative's progress over several seasons. For your record, the pic traveled the fest circuit within the this past year beneath the title "Wiangliang's Ideal."Camera (color, HD), Guo Jia editor, Li Fang music, Tong Zhaoji production designer, Xu Wenzheng appear, Yi Xiong. It Shoulda Been You
Richard Kline, Tyne Daly, Harriet Harris and Howard McGillin are dueling in-laws and regulations in new tuner It Shoulda Been You.
A George Street Playhouse presentation of the musical in 2 functions with music and concept by Barbara Anselmi lyrics and book by John Hargrove additional lyrics by Jill Abramovitz, Carla Rose Fisher, Michael Cooper, Ernie Lijoi, Will Randall. Direction by David Hyde Pierce choreography by Noah Racey. Music direction by Greg Anthony.Jenny Steinberg - Lisa Howard

John Howard - Matthew Hydzik
Greg Madison - Curtis Holbrook

Albert - Edward Hibbert
Georgette Howard - Harriet Harris
George Howard - Howard McGillin
Marty Kaufman - David JosefsbergBroadway involves New Brunswick using the new musical comedy "It Shoulda Been You." The cast -- headed by Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris, with the kind of Howard McGillin and Edward Hibbert in support -- is impressive. Design team includes top-level names Anna Louizos, William Ivey Lengthy and Ken Billington. David Hyde Pierce makes what appears to become his pointing debut, and producers Scott Landis, Michael Hanel and Daryl Roth are attached. With all of this, "It Shoulda Been You" shoulda been good. The score is weak, though, and also the book will be a scream in 1965. What we should have here's "Abie's Irish Rose" once again. The truth that couple of people keep in mind that lengthy-running hit signifies precisely how past-dated "It Shoulda Been You" is later sitcom models include "The Moms-in-Law" and "Bridget Loves Bernie." Jewish girl weds Catholic boy, using the cliche-Jewish mama (Daly) pitted from the tippling WASP mother (Harris) they can reprise individuals "Abie" jokes concerning the rabbi and also the priest. This really is "Love Boat" territory, overall but can there be still a crowd for "The Love Boat"? The authors eventually make things more sophisticated, only one twist in the first act curtain along with a rapid-and-funny final 20 minutes aren't enough. Music originates from Barbara Anselmi, who also takes credit for that concept. It is as simple as TV-scribe John Hargrove younger crowd creates half the lyrics, using the relaxation from a committee of 5 receiving title-page credit. (That's lots of authors for gems like "It shoulda been you, a minimum of you are a Jew.") You will find a really couple of reasonably effective tunes on the way, but we must hold back until the ultimate number for a high quality one, a quartet for that parents known as "That's Family." The stars go all to make things enjoyable every single among the 13 cheers happens. Daly breezes through her role because the Jewish mother to finish all Jewish moms, however who saw her in last season's "Master Class" realize that she is capable of doing much more. Harris constitutes a perfect foil, and it is extremely funny so might be McGillin and Richard Kline because the two husbands. Leading those and transporting the show may be the little-known Lisa Howard -- a Drama Desk Award-champion for "The 25th Annual Putnam Valley Spelling Bee" -- as sister from the bride. When she sings an audio lesson, it will get sang. Hyde Pierce has his stars provide the jokes effectively and it has a knack for farcical staging, while choreographer Noah Racey makes do together with his couple of possibilities. Allow it to be observed that the George Street customers appear to become eating up. 5-week run is really a virtual sellout, however they're getting Broadway stars and production values for affordable prices without making the hourlong drive into the city and having to pay for parking. "It Shoulda Been You" must do fine with upper middle-class Jewish senior citizens -- there have been convulsive shrieks all occasions the lick offered mangled Yiddish ("keena ahora") -- but this can be a diminishing demographic. So how exactly does this type of slight entertainment as "It Shoulda Been You" obtain a gilt-edged, first-class mounting in a small regional like George Street? One guesses that Hyde Pierce, husband of lyricist/librettist Hargrove, drawn strings and known as buddies. The cast appears to become getting a great time, a minimum of, as well as their clowning a lot more than makes up for that weary writing.Set, Anna Louizos costumes, William Ivey Lengthy lighting, Ken Billington seem, Acme Seem Partners orchestrations, Doug Besterman production stage manager, Thomas Clewell. House: The New Dean of Medicine Speaks!
House, Omar Epps There's a new Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. And on Monday's episode of House, that new dean was Dr. Gregory House's ticket out of prison. After House (Hugh Laurie) drove his car through her house, Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) left her post at the hospital. And taking her place is none other than Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps)! Foreman showed up at the prison with a judge's order to release House on conditional parole under Foreman's supervision. The catch: House must return to the hospital to help his fellow doctors save an organ donor's lungs so that a transplant patient can receive them. And as you might expect, not everyone at Princeton-Plainsboro is happy to see House. Fall Preview: Get scoop on all your favorite returning shows So was House worth the risk? And will he actually respect Foreman's new authority? We chatted with Epps about all that and more. Plus: What does Foreman see in Dr. Park (Charlyne Yi)? What was your reaction when you found out they were going to make you the boss?Omar Epps: I thought it was great. I thought it was creative. It was a great change-up for me, and I was just excited to see how it's going to pan out and how the relationship and banter between Foreman and House is going to take on its new life. What kind of leader do you think we're going to see Foreman be this year?Epps: Well, I think it's going to be a combination of a lot of things. The Foreman of old is pretty thorough and pretty much a hard a-- and just pays attention to details. But at the same time, when you're running such a huge operation, it's hard to micromanage. House exclusive: Get a first look at unseen photos Why do you think Foreman went out of his way to bring House back to Princeton-Plainsboro?Epps: Obviously Foreman cares about the guy, not to mention he has a lot of respect for him. He basically puts his neck out on the line... This is the last guy they want back in the hospital. But at the end of the day, he's still the best doctor. Foreman's playing the politics and the reality at the same time. But in terms of the friendship between them, it's just the best place for him to be. House is sort of rebuilding his life and coming back into the hospital is good for both of them in the long run. We've seen Foreman step up before and it caused tension with House. Can we expect more of the same? Epps: I think there is some tension there but it's sort of balancing itself out. The bottom line is, Foreman is the boss, and he's running the hospital. And I think that there's a mutual respect there. I think that House realizes the magnitude of the risk that Foreman is taking. When the student becomes the teacher, that's just sort of a weird dichotomy. But I think House realizes the error in his ways. And it's been a year, so life has completely moved on. [Foreman] is one person from his past that's reaching out to say, "Hey, I care about you and let's help you rebuild your life." Because Foreman is taking such a risk, will House try to behave, at least at first?Epps: (Laughs) I think you know the answer to that question. It will be interesting to see how far House goes with that, because at the end of the day, the stakes are real. This is not just about Foreman putting his neck out. House can go back to jail at any given time. So he certainly doesn't want that but, he's still going to be himself. 6 Burning questions from House's Season 8 premiere Cuddy used to call Foreman "House-lite" because of his willingness to do whatever to solve a case. So in some ways, House may find Foreman to be an ideal boss.Epps: Definitely. I think he's lucked out. Foreman is someone who understands House's method of madness. So that's going to work to House's favor at times. And I think it will work to Foreman's detriment at times. So is House worth the risk? Epps: I think Foreman knows ... how House operates. It's like having Bret Favre be your quarterback: You know he's going to throw a couple of interceptions, but you might win the game. ... He knows to have House operating at full capacity, he's going to have to give him that space.Hopefully he won't f--- things up too bad. How's the rest of the team going to react to Foreman as Dean of Medicine, assuming they return? Epps: When we start the season everyone's been gone - literally no one's at the hospital. House has been in jail. It's been a year, so life has gone on. But eventually, I think that those relationships are going to play out. I think that's part of what we'll discover in the upcoming episodes. House Season 8 scoop: Cuddy fallout, new blood and a return to the show's roots There is also some new blood. What does Foreman see in Dr. Park (Yi) that he would save her from her dust-up in neurology? Epps: I wouldn't say she's a Foreman protégé, but... Foreman has a soft spot for her and thinks she's definitely capable. I also think part of that camaraderie between Foreman and her will be that Foreman will have some eyes on the inside. He might expect that loyalty, but I don't know if he's necessarily going to get it. We also know Dr. Adams (Odette Annable), who House met in prison will make her way to the hospital. Epps: That sort of comes about in a weird way. She's not a Foreman hire. That ends up coming with House's new sort of baggage. Foreman ... has to feel that one out. When I spoke with creator David Shore, he said Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) will be saying goodbye. As someone who had some romantic history with her, will Foreman be affected by that? Epps: I don't want to give that one away. We'll see. I think if you go back to last season that was sort of dealt with. But I don't know. You never know what's going to happen in the future. So, if House goes too far, will Foreman be able to rein him in?Epps: I think he's going to put his foot down, but it's going to be a battle. You put your foot down with House, he tries to find a way around it. But Foreman used to work for House, so he knows all of his tricks. He helped facilitate half the madness. So in that sense, he's sort of a step ahead and he feels confident in being a step ahead. At the same time, he knows House is going find a new bag of tricks, so Foreman has got to stay sharp. They both know that the stakes are high. So, I think the reins are as tight as they have ever been. It's one of those things where it's both of you guys' last chance. If this guy messes up, you're both out of here. Do you think Foreman was the right choice?

Courageous
A Sony Pictures Entertainment release of a TriStar Pictures and Sherwood Pictures presentation in association with Provident Films and Affirm Films of a Kendrick Brothers production. Produced by Stephen Kendrick. Executive producers, Michael C. Catt, Jim McBride, Terry Hemmings. Directed by Alex Kendrick. Screenplay, Alex Kendrick, Stephen Kendrick. With: Alex Kendrick, Ken Bevel, Ben Davies, Kevin Downes, Robert Amaya, Rusty Martin.Moviegoers devoted to faith-based fare will flock to megaplexes for "Courageous," easily the most polished production so far from brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, the prolific and increasingly accomplished filmmaking pastors at the Sherwood Church of Albany, Ga. Their latest effort appears poised to surpass the near-miraculous B.O. success of "Fireproof," one of 2008's highest-grossing indies of any denomination, and should enjoy a long afterlife as homevid product. Mainstream breakout success likely will prove elusive, as the pic will prove too preachy for many tastes, but even agnostics could respond to the Kendricks' uplifting message regarding responsible parenting. Both Kendrick siblings collaborated on the script, and Stephen gets solo credit as producer. But Alex makes fair claim to be the true multihyphenate here, capably serving as director and lead actor. The plot focuses on the relationships formed and concerns shared by four dedicated sheriff's deputies and an upright Mexican immigrant in a midsized Georgia community; over the course of "Courageous," however, Adam Mitchell (Alex Kendrick) emerges as unmistakably first among equals in terms of importance and screen time. Introduced as a basically decent fellow whose only sins are workaholism and emotional reserve, Adam endures a devastating tragedy early on that causes him to question his values. Comforted and inspired by his religious faith, he vows to become a better parent to his mildly rebellious teen son (Rusty Martin). Furthermore, he encourages his friends to join him in signing a pledge -- not unlike the "Love Dare" that figured so prominently in "Fireproof" -- to seek and follow God's guidance while being the best dad possible. Trouble is, one member of the group is quite capable of moral compartmentalizing: Even while promising to do the right thing as a father, he's willing to break a few commandments for some quick cash. Some conversations about religion and redemption come off as convincingly sincere but entirely too long-winded. In fact, the pic as a whole would have benefited from judicious trimming down from its 129-minute length. But director Kendrick handles a few action setpieces with impressive dexterity, and performances across the board are credible and creditable. Indeed, makers of secular indies and even major studio productions would do well to check out "Courageous" for casting possibilities. It should be noted that the underlying message of "Courageous" is all the more compelling because of its context. Time and again, the pic effectively emphasizes how the deputies are reminded on a daily basis what eventually can happen to at-risk children who don't have fathers involved in their lives. Little wonder, then, that they're moved to ask God's help to hone their own paternal skills.Camera (Deluxe color), Bob Scott; editors, Alex Kendrick, Stephen Hullfish, Bill Ebel; music, Mark Willard; production designers, Darian Corley, Sheila McBride; costume designer, Terri Catt; sound (Dolby Digital/SDDS), Rob Whitehurst; associate producers, Dennis Wiemer, Larry Frenzel; assistant director, Stephen Ostrander; casting, Catt.
